DWARFG_LONG is a tool that helps you handle your devices. The most basic steps allowing you to properly monitor your devices are:
To connect device to the DWARFG_LONG so that you can work with it, you need to install so-called agent on the device. See Device agents for more information or jump to the introduction video link below.
Once you connect some devices, you can inspect all the information provided via agent by entering Details for a device by clicking on Detail button in the Devices list
Inspecting each and every device is not very practical and the main usecase for a device administrator is to just see if there are some devices misbehaving. For this purpose you can use the Dashboard that gives overall status broken down into a few indicators and a list of device groups, their state and potential alerts. The Dashboard compiles a lot of information in one place so you may want to read the Dashboard Explained help page so that you can maximize the information potencial offered there.
When you know how to use DWARFG_LONG for regular device monitoring, you can setup more advanced and human-convenient functions like alerting and notification:
Instead of proactively monitor the Dashboard, you can setup notifications so that DWARFG_LONG would be able to notify you when something goes out of the ordinery. As of DWARFG_LONG 1.0, the e-mail and Slack notification channels are suported.
To detect when something goes out of the ordinary, DWARFG_LONG use so-called alerts. An alert is triggered when conditions are met. DWARFG_LONG comes with a few pre-defined alerts. While these may be just okay for you, you may deactivate these alerts and define your own at the alert table More details about how does the alerting work and how to setup your own alert, please follow to help on Alerts
An important and useful concept to not miss here are the Monitoring Groups. Monitoring Groups allows you to segment your devices, thus e.g. setting a different alerts for the all-present devices (cellular routers that should be 100% online) and another alert for desktop machines (that can e.g. be taken down for several days without causing an alert).
Also, every Monitoring Group gets automatically listed on the Dashboard, thus allowing for a quick overview. Don't forget about the omnipresent All devices Monitoring group that allways allows for a system-wide alert definition.
Visit quick help on Monitoring groups to learn more about them.
Once you are happy with the monitoring setup, you may want to manage your devices via DWARFG_LONG. While a bit more detailed information is given in the Configuring devices help section, the following provides an overview of the options provided:
Direct management functions differ per device type. E.g. for Advantech cellular routers, DWARFG_LONG is able to perform reflash of the Firmware. You may request a reflash to be performed for any firmware version that is known, available and approved by administrator. Follow to How to manage Firmware to find out more.
Via the WebTunnel functionality, you are able to access the device local web interface and thus able to perform any regular management function like you would directly connect to the device. This functinality depends on complete ssh client being installed on device. By default, Linux distributions and e.g. Advantech routers do contain such ssh client. For other device types (Teltonika routers, OpenWRT devices), you may need to replace the limited ssh client there with a fully-featured one to make Webtunnels functionality operational from the device end. Follow to the How to manage WebTunnels to learn about how to explore this feature.
As for the automation functionality area, DWARFG_LONG offers the automated device agent deployment (available for all device types), agent profiles (any device type as well, see Agent profiles ) device configuration cloning (Advantech routers only) and also Analytics functions like Changes Tracker and Traffic Calculation. Configuration cloning is covered under the Configuring devices section.
To complete the basic overview of DWARFG_LONG you should keep in mind that whenever there is a topic you need some help with, there is in-app help, accessible either from the top bar via the help icon that would bring you to the DWARFG_LONG Resources Compendium or via a contextual help icon situated directly next to the topic/feature name. Also, you may access any help page directly from the left menu under the Help section. In case you would experience a situation needing some troubleshooting, please remember that there is a dedicated troubleshooting help section that could give you a hand or at least point you to additional resources.
